First, the decomposition stage at the time of discovery directly determines how deep fluid penetration has gone — active decay and advanced decay stages involve structurally penetrant fluid that requires subfloor assessment, concrete treatment, or wall cavity inspection regardless of what the visible surface suggests. Second, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by decomposition — putrescine, cadaverine, hydrogen sulfide, indole, and skatole — have typically saturated porous structural materials including drywall, insulation, and wood framing by the time of discovery, making odor remediation a multi-cycle specialist process that runs separately from surface biohazard treatment rather than as a single step within it.
